Acupuncture for infertility

Acupuncture for infertility

Challenges conceiving are common place in today's world. As we leave starting our families until later and often have to combine work place pressures with finding time to relax, our nervous systems are on height alert and work against us at this important time.

Western medicine takes a look at physiological issues that hold back pregnancy and once these tests are completed then a diagnosis of 'inexplained infertility' can often be a blow for couples leading to frustration, sadness and a sense of hopelessness. Relationships can suffer as a result.

The Eastern model looks to re-balance the body physically and emotionally. It has a powerful effect on calming the nervous system which is so often adrenalised and heightened at this time. It has the ability to balance the hormonal system too and regulate periods which is very helpful for conception and can support menstrual issues such as PCOS, endometriosis and fibroids. The holistic model also takes a look sat optimising health with diet and powerful lifestyle changes.

Acupuncture is also a helpful adjunct to an IVF cycle as it can work to support the uterine lining, encourage ovulation and calm the mind at a stressful time. Treatments at stimulation time can support side effects of the medication and allay anxiety. At transfer time are sessions are helpful as research shows this can improve the outcome.

Men can also benefit from acupuncture as it supports low sperm count by nourishing the lower back and kidneys, often compromised due to stressful lives. Tailored diet and lifestyle suggestions further enhance the benefits of acupuncture treatments.

FAQs

Here are some of our most asked questions, please do get in touch if you have any queries or would like to talk through how I can help you.

  • Acupuncture is a really supportive tool for fertility. It's main benefit is its ability to re-balance the body, particularly the hormonal system which often comes 'off course' at times of emotional stress. This can lead to varying cycle lengths and challenging pre-menstraul symptoms. It is also profoundly calming for the central nervous system and many of those struggling to conceive find this helpful in this stressful time.

Working with the period cycle over 2 months usually gives a good indication as to how effective this will be to support this time. Many women feel instantly calmer and the body feels more responsive. We review the effectiveness regularly by checking in on sleep, emotions and menstrual patterns.

  • A good time to get acupuncture for fertility is if your cycles become erratic or if you have been trying to conceive with no luck for more than 12 months. It is also helpful if you feel there could be an emotional component to your ability to conceive. Acupuncture is also very helpful at supporting IVF cycles and for secondary infertility.

  • There is no magic answer to this question unfortunately! Everyone is individual and has a different story and health pattern. However, it is true to say that it is a very calming technique and so the nervous system has a deep knock on effect on the hormonal system, which is very positive for the body!

  • Usually 4 to 6 sessions are helpful, either weekly or fortnightly. This allows the body to respond over 2 menstrual cycles to effect some change. A review often takes place after this to monitor progress. Acupuncture can be very dynamic!
